Technical term

What is a DNS server?

When you type a website address into your browser, such as "www.eksempel.no", your computer needs to find out where on the internet that website actually is. This is where the DNS server comes in.

DNS stands for "Domain Name System" and acts as a kind of directory for the internet. The DNS server translates a website address into a numerical IP address that computers use to find the website online. It's like translating a street address into GPS coordinates.

For example, if you try to visit "www.eksempel.no", your computer sends a request to a DNS server. The DNS server checks its own "directory" and finds that "www.eksempel.no" corresponds to the IP address 192.0.2.123. Your computer can then use this IP address to find the website and display it in your browser.

So, in short, a DNS server is an important part of the internet infrastructure that helps translate website addresses into IP addresses so that computers can find and view web pages quickly and easily.
