What is a design process?
The design process is an approach designers and developers use to develop creative solutions for products or services.
The purpose of the design process is to understand needs, explore ideas, develop concepts and test the solutions. Before the final solution is ready to be taken into use. The design process is divided into 4 phases: explore, design, develop and evaluate. Below we explain the different phases of the design process:
- Explore
Start by understanding the customer and the target group, and then find out what problems or needs they have. In this phase, the various ideas are put on the table, where relevant insights are taken further in the process. - Designing
The best ideas are taken forward and concrete solutions are developed based on the ideas. In this phase, it is common to outline different solutions and navigation in a prototype. Whether it's for an application or a website. The purpose is to see what will work best. - Develop
In this phase, the framework designed in the design phase is used to test how the solution will work in practice. This is where further specifications for the design are developed. At the end of this phase, the solution is launched and the people who will be using the tool are trained in how it works. - Evaluate
Between each step, it's a good idea to evaluate your work. To see if there is anything that should be improved or adjusted with the current solution. Beyond that, it is important to evaluate during the process. In this phase, the product or service should also be user tested. It can also be an idea to get an evaluation from experts if it is within a specific area.
A design process is constantly evolving, and what works for one customer may not work for the next. That's why it's good to have a general design process like the one we've explained above.
