What is a design system?
A design system is a collection of guidelines, elements and different types of tools intended for designers and developers. Let's explore this further!
The design system can almost be compared to when you read the introduction to the board game Monopoly, for example. In the game, you want everyone to have a common understanding of the game before you start. The same applies to the design system, where you want everyone to be aware of what is important for the design of a specific website. Everything is stored in one place to create great user experiences across products and platforms.
Designer systems often contain:
- Visual guidelines: graphic material such as colors, typography, icons and images that help define the visual brand identity.
- Library for various elements: A set of buttons, forms, cards and modules that can be used for different websites and applications. These can be reusable, so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel every time.
- Principles for the design: Guidelines on how the design should be used, addressing responsive design, usability, user focus and accessibility.
- Documentation: Says something about how the system should be used. Examples of best practice for design and development can also be included here.
The purpose of a design system is to reduce the time you spend on design and development. In addition, it should contribute to better collaboration between colleagues and, not least, ensure a coherent and professional end product.
