What is an icon?

An icon is often referred to as a simple visual symbol, but is more than that. They play an important role in everyday communication, simplifying and conveying information quickly - especially in situations where language barriers can be an obstacle. Icons have a simple, recognizable design to make them understandable to everyone.

Let's take a closer look at some examples. We surround ourselves with several icons in everyday life, which we use without thinking about it. For example, we use icons to find out where the restroom is, or as a guide to where the tram and bus stop is. Even digitally, we have some examples like the shopping cart on an online store, to get to your cart, or a pencil to start writing a new email.

Icon - definition
The word "icon" actually has several different meanings. In a religious context, it refers to paintings of the divine and holy figures that are important for worship, especially in the Orthodox Church. In our everyday language, the word "icon" has taken on a modern meaning and is used for graphic symbols associated with a visual profile, digital design and user interface. In addition, we use the term "iconic" to refer to something or someone who is considered an admirable role model or plays an important role in our society.
